Charansingh is a born martial. He belongs to the clan of turbanned "surds/sardarjis"- considered to be the most martial and heroic among all the Indian clans/races.Historically this clan was formed from the then Hindus only ; by their founder 'Guru Gobind Singh' to protect Hindus from the tyrannies of Mughal rulers espacially 'Aurangzebh'.The word 'singh'means a tiger in hindi and signifies bravery and fearlessness.
Charansingh came to our family in Srinagar , Kashmir when he was just 13 years old.He was brought in by my late grandfather to work as a family aid.Definately i consider it wrong to call Charansingh a family servant because through his 40 years of service life with our family he had become more like a family member and an elder in the family.
Charansingh never married. As a child i used to ask him about his wife and family and he used to dodge this child with all kinds of silly answers like 'he drove away his wife coz she used to fart too much after eating lot of raw rice'.But Charansingh was too crazy about the women in his village ( Tral in Kashmir ) and daily as he would wash the utensils he would fantacise going to his village and the women there calling him in their sweet voice and inviting him to eat rice. This all show 'monologue' would be staged daily by charansingh as he washed the utensils and our family was sooo used to it - 'Charansingha vala batta khio ' ie a village woman calling charansingh in her voice in Kashmiri language ' Charansingh come and eat rice with us'.
During those days ie about 25 years back my Grandfather used to pay Charansingh a monthly salary of Rs 20 ( ie half a dollar).Free food and a separate servant quarter as an accomodation. His salary was perhaps lowest in the whole area but in his leisure time charansingh used to practice the art of fortunetelling through studying hands. He would tell unmarried men when they were gonna get married etc by studying the lines in their hands. To the best of my knowledge charansingh was a fake handreader but he used to make some earnings with this.He used to charge one rupee ie (1/40)th of a dollar for one handreading.
In the morning ,myself and my 2 sisters wished to enjoy more of the sweet morning sleep. But as we were school going childeren about 8 years old he would come and plafully pull out our bedding setting us rolling over the sheets. We would laugh and it had become a kinda game for us.
Chransingh was also the guardian of our life and property.I remember that one day two grown up ruffian islamic fanatic childeren from the neighbouhood tried to rough me up and harass me unprovoked. Charansingh always used to carry a 'Kirpan' - a small sword under his belt. This is a religous requirement for all people belonginging to the martial sect of surds / sardarjis.Charansingh took out his 'kirpan' and chased the ruffians with startling speed like a tiger chasing his prey. The two ruffians were terrified and surprised. One of them lost his balance and flung himself flat into an open dirty drain on the road side. The other one managed to escape gasping for breath.I was set bursting with laughter. All the islamic fanatics thereafter dreaded Charansingh and often used to ask me about him.
Charansingh was totally illitrate. He used to believe in Quacks and Magic for treatment of illness.Often he used to be befooled by these Quacks. He was suffering from Blood Pressure as he had started getting older. My father took him to a doctor and gave him the medicines.Charan singh took all the medicines for one week at a single time thinking it would have cumulative effect at a time.
Charansingh used to tell my grandfather not to worry about him.Charansingh would say that he had brought us childeren up like his own childeren and when we grew up we would take care of him in his old age.
Then in 1988 , due to sudden eruption of islamic militancy in Kashmir we ( minority hindus ) had to leave Kashmir all of a sudden for the safety of our lives.I had at that time just joined an engineering college 3000 km from my home.We all shifted to Jammu - a safer place where luckily we had another small house. In this chaos Charan -singh disappeared mysteriously. My Grandfather was the last to see him.
Honestly i don't know where he left.Charansingh had grown old now but in our house at jammu also (despite our changed economic circumstances due to sudden exodus from Kashmir )we had kept one small separate room for Charansingh. These turbanned sikhs look so similar that many a times i would mistake some other sikh walking on the road to be him and then become disappointed. Before this also Charansingh had left our home several times(over some altercation with my grandfather) but finally he would always return to us.But this time he never returned.
My granfather and grandmother also expired but there is no news of Charansingh for past 20 years. It is believed that he fled to 'Golden Temple ' in Amritsar - the religious abode of the Sikhs in India and that there he was possibly killed in the " Blue Star Operation" ; when Indian Army raided the temple.
There is very remote possiblity that Charansingh may be alive.I dont know where he is but i do wish to find out.He disappeared so mysteriously. In case i find him.He shall be welcome to his home and be looked after like a family elder only.
Charansingh where are u ? I do miss u so much.Plz do come back
