Why Republicans don't know what they are on about...

You'll find that unless they change the constitution, the Democrats cannot redefine what is and isn't offensive. There is a reason why the Judiciary has independence from the President and Congress. Somehow I can't see them changing the constitution anytime soon for the sake of someones feelings. It was Bush and the Republicans who enacted the Patriot act whereby your simple speech is monitored and can get you labelled an enemy combatant and shipped off to Gitmo. Not the Democrats. So Republicans wanna dictate what consenting adults can do. Even to benign things such as a civil union? Pot? Kettle? Black? Taxes could always be lower. It is responsible spending that allows one to lower taxes...I'm sure the Democrats will be able to lower taxes a little once Republican George's massive military expenditures have been paid for. SInce when have personal hand guns been used (or even bought to be used) against terrorists? Or even the government? Neither. Their constitutional protection is no longer valid because the reason for which this right was granted is no longer relevant. Abortion is something that Obama has no control over. It is a matter of constitutional rights and protections and as such is decided by the independent Legislature. So the Democrats "thinking" on abortion is of no actual consequence. Ever considered that it is the very presence of the US military that is provoking the continued violence in Iraq? Obama has. McCain hasn't. Weather forecasting is not the same as long-term environmental predictions. Warmer seas are proven to increase the intensity and destruction of hurricanes. Scientists do not claim that changes do not ordinarily occur in the environment over millenia, but rather they make a very strong case that such changes can be ACCELERATED by greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. The earth cools and heats naturally, but the scientific evidence points to greenhouse gas emissions accelerating this cycle to a point where it could have massive consequences for everyone. But you can just keep ignoring that if you want. Oil companies are big and ugly enough to fight their own battles. I'm sur they have bought and sold enough (Republican) politicians and presidents to have a bit of cumuppance on the way. They are not purely competitive businesses and are able to collude to artificially increase prices so that consumers pay more, and more, and more, and more...There is defence for a monopoly business. It is at the mercy of the state. Always. Please find a large monopoly industry or business in the world that is not heavily regulated or monitored by the state(s). There are none. Because at the end of the day business is there to serve the people not the other way around. |

It is true that neocons have unilaterally developed PATRIOT ACT USA which gave the government right to invade the privacy of U.S. citizens through monitoring private phone, getting access to our private e-mail as well as hijacking our freedom of speech. However you have to also understand that as far as wiring our private telephone, it was actually Bill Clinton who started this. And this was before "War On Terror" became U.S. political paradigm. And let us not also forget the fact that Obama is supporing wiring our phone as well. So to assume that this is "not Democrats" who are doing this is simply wrong. Remember, Democrats have also supported Republicans passing PATRIOT ACT. And this is happening due to the corporatization of U.S. politic which indicates that this country is on its path toward fascism. Take a look at the police brutality against leftist demonstrations in both Democratic and Republican National Conventions to clear the audiences only for those who support those two corporate parties. This shows how U.S. is headed toward becoming police state. FuturePhD said that U.S. is going become a police state through Republican leadership but however such potential also exist with Democratic leadership as well. I will have to disagree with sweetpepe in regarding the "fear" that we feel in the U.S. in regarding possible terrorist attack. Working class Americans(especially those who are blacks) actually feel greater threat from racist police brutality against them than any terrorist attack. Beside "War On Terror", U.S. also have decades long policy called "War On Drugs" which is federal policy against working class African Americans as well as Latin Americans in regarding "war against Drugs and violence" which in actuality condemn African Americans and Latin Americans as "guilty" unless they are proven innocent. Recent study shows that whites have greater tendency of abusing Drugs (after all Drug usage came from hippie culture which are predominantly whites) and have greater possibility of possessing illegal Drugs in their car, while in actuality, it is African Americans and Latin Americans who are most likely to be profiled and have their car pulled for Drug search by white police officers. This isn't simply acts of individual white racist police officers but it is federal policy that criminalizes both African Americans and Latin Americans. Also it is true that there are more Americans dying from lack of health care than terrorist attack, this typifies that such policies are actually looking for problems in wrong areas. And that is because it's not policies that are looking for problems but they are basically agenda for intensifying unilateralist imperialism. This is no different than any other "socialist" totalitarian nations like Stalinist Soviet Union, Maoist China and North Korea which all intensified(or intensify) the unilateral political power of state apparatus as pretext for fighting against U.S. imperialism that destabilized democracy for citizens for any citizens who criticize their governments for democracy were(or still are) consider(ed) as threat coming from "outside". U.S. "War On Terror" and PATRIOT ACT really is mirror image of Stalinist totalitarianism. These aren't simply mobilized by Republicans but Democrats are also supporters of this. "If I could lead you into the promised land, i could lead you back out again."

What qualifies a New Zealand citizen to talk the most important document of United States of America? Constitution is a sacred document and should not be changed by a whim of any generation. Yet this is what Obama supports - a dynamic constitution. Another reason why he is not a very savory character to me. One point - the guns have not been used in American soil to kill terrorists because US gov't has done a pretty adequate job of keeping the terrorists out of US soil so far. Owen, you may NOT feel the danger sitting over there in your hemisphere, but, we here do NOT wanna be caught with our pants down when the sworn enemies of US come to get us some day.

I like the intellectual Owen too. As he said, constitutional issues cannot be changed by any one particular party, nor should it be their mission. Constitutional changes (amendments) have only been made 27 times in the past 220 years, with the first ten coming immediately after ratification. That's basically only 17 changes to the original document in 220 years! Add to that the 21st Amendment repealed the 18th Amendment and we really only have 15 important enough changes in 220 years, which is phenomenal! According to Wikipedia (not the greatest source, but good enough for this stat), there have been over 10,000 proposed amendments, but only 27 have made the grade. Our constitution is one smart, long-lived document! We as Americans take for granted our founding fathers wisdom, their initial courage, their long-lasting intellect and the importance of our historical documents. In just our (America's) time nearly all countries have gone from monarchies to dictatorships to republics to socialism and back to republics and started and fought two world wars, while we have maintained the same government. To paraphrase what I think Owen was saying, we can't have change for changes sake. There has to be a reason. Whether we agree with abortion, bearing arms or government spending, those are things covered by the constitution. Whether we agree with the Patriot Act, civil unions, oil cartels or military actions, those are covered by our duly elected officials. The Supreme's influence is only to determine the legality of the bill, law or action. Only greenhouse emissions are up for grabs for the moment. Soon that may be legislated as well, and then it's out of our hands as well. Where I don't agree is on the subject of some small group's rights over those of the majority. The ones I agree with are covered in the bill of rights and select others (i.e., slavery, suffrage). What the Supreme's often use to determine legality of other bills is bump it against the 9th amendment. However, if legislation of "civil unions" is ever allowed or disallowed officially on the federal level, it will be because of the 9th amendment. I think the reason it hasn't been so far isn't because of discrimination so much as it's about simple economics. Add five percent more benefits packages on the job, various insurance riders, claims and benefits there, court actions (divorces, suing, palimony) all due to civil unions and it's a recipe for disaster. The one way morally I don't agree with civil unions is they will undoubtedly lead to legal child adoption, which is the only way true homosexuals (whether gay or lesbian) can "procreate." To quote Pope John Paul I, "Homosexuality is not hereditary." With homosexual pedophilia occurring at a rate ten times the heterosexual rate, I personally am not a big fan of homosexuals being allowed unsupervised around pre-pubescent children. A great movie with this subject as a side theme is the Kevin Kline movie "Trade" which I encourage everyone to watch. It's about the bigger sex trade problem, however, child trafficking is also addressed.
