I would have to admit to believing in Karma just to call myself a Buddhist, but I think Karma is like having a true conscience and if one were to do something inappropriate then we would unconsciously punish ourselves. In the same way we can make good things happen. I don't think we have complete control of our destiny, but it is possible to guide ourselves to increase the chance for good things to happen. But I certainly wouldn't endorse a book like "The Secret", to me that's just a load of **** written just to make money.

Karma.....It's the point of view. None of us are not at fault...and none of us are oblivous to the meaning of Karma...so when something bad happens, many of us just assume it's Karma. Karma is bullshit...(although i have to admitt I do watch myself ...just in case..)

Sweetie; Saco 1 described karma nicely .Fine but he did not tell about the method how to get rid of malefic effects of karma of past and present births. Thats more important i suppose. Saco1; U can also write a long / an elaborate comment if u have a detailed knowlege and understanding of the subject that you are writing about. Verses from hindu religious scripture 'Bhagvad Gita ' about karma 'in sanskrit language'( very ancient indian language ) and then its translation to english are as under ;- English Conversion ;- God Vishnu ( Krishna ) says that whenever there is a destruction of dharma ie righteous deeds and righteousness.When evil is at its peak and dharma ie righteousness is the risk of getting lost.At that very time lord vishnu himself takes birth in the form of a human being and he desroys the forces of evil and restores dharma / righteousness to its original glory. Hello Jamie ! Karma is a hindi word.It means deeds ie actions.Righteous actions / good deeds result in good karma and evil deeds result in bad karma. Karma is mentioned and well elaborated in ancient hindu scriptures 'the bhagwad gita' , 'the vedas ', 'the upnishadas ' and the 'puranas'etc. Weather your present life is going to be full of comforts or hardships ; depends on the karma of your present life and the balance of karma from the previous life.So even if u a nice human being in this birth you life can be a hell coz of balance of karma of your previous life/s.Hell or heaven its all here.Weather u get hell or heaven it all depends on weather ur karma / deeds have been righteous or evil. According to theory of transmigration of soul the kind of rebirth u get again depends on ur past karma.So if one has been a butcher and has a bad karma he may be born as a goat and face the slaughterhouse.On the other hand a person with an exceptionally nice karma will be born as a human being. In Bhagvad Gita god vishnu ( krishna ) stresses upon the need to be karmayogi.A karmayogi is one who does his assigned deeds deligently unmindful of the results.He leaves the results to god.He has no attachment to results and he takes success and failure alike.His face does not frown upon failure and he does not rejoice upon sucess either. HOW TO GET RID OF MALEIFIC EFFECTS OF PAST KARMA ;- YOUR PRESENT HARDSHIPS CAN BE DUE TO THE PAST BALANCE OF KARMA ( BAD KARMA ).ITS EFFECTS CAN BE REDUCED BY 1) WORSHIP AND COMPLETE SURRENDER TO GOD. 2) SAGELY PEOPLE IE PEOPLE WHO SPEND WHOLE OF THEIR LIVES IN THE WORSHIP OF GOD.THESE PEOPLE ARE DEAR TO GOD.THEY HAVE THE POWER TO NULLIFY THE ILL EFFECTS OF THEIR KARMA.BUT THIS REDUCES THEIR POWERES SO THEY HELP U ONLY IF U ARE VERY DEAR AND CONFIDIATE TO THEM.SO IF U FIND ONE OF SUCH DIVINE SAINTS AND IF U MANAGE TO GET THEIR ATTENTION AND TRUST U CAN GET RID OF THE EVIL EFFECTS OF BAD KARMA OR BALANCE OF BAD KARMA OF PREVIOUS LIVES. 3)HELPING THE POOR , THE NEEDY , THE SICK , DONATIONS ETC AS PER UR CAPACITY I find so many things in religious scriptures conflicting but my concience tells me that if i hurt people / living beings nature will punish me and if i help the needy , the sick , nature will reward me. So jamie never hurt/ignore anyone.If someone tells u that he likes u and he cares for u plz dont ignore him.It is not necessary that u should also like / love him but at least u can acknowledge by telling him that u understand him.If for no other reason , u can do it at least for the sake of your karma.
