So I interviewed a guy who had applied for a position in my team today. I didn't really expect him to be fully dressed up as most of software engineers dress pretty casually these days when they go on a job interview but this guy was too much. He showed up in short pants and flip flops! I almost WTF'ed him. lol And his attitude was even worse. I ask him a question about a problem we face in a real situation and he comes back to me with this question. "Do you guys really use it?" I write software for a living and I know I don't really have to be fully dressed up when I go on an interview but I still dress nicely 'cause I know it never hurts to look nice on a job interview. How do I know this? Because I interview a lot of people and if someone shows up dressed poorly, I get an impression that he doesn't take this job opportunity seriously! If you don't really have a lot of experience with job interviews and you are looking for a job, please keep in mind how you look actually matters no matter what kind of job you are applying for, so please dress nicely when you go on a job interview! |

No matter what the interview is for, you always dress in a suit!!!!!! Whether you are a cook, janitor, CEO, etc... The suit makes a lasting impression.

Sean, Yes I agree with you 100%... When I interview anyone they better be dressed appropriately. It shows the employer that you are serious about the job and you want it.. The guy you interviewed seems like he could take or leave it attitude.

I agree, you can almost never overdress for an interview in my experience (accounting, banking and teaching). If you think you are slightly overdressed in the interview you can easily take off the jacket and even the tie and unbutton the shirt if need be. It may be kinda unfortunate for some people but your visual appearance really is important on the first meeting be it a date or interview because they will decide then whether they wanna meet you again. The next or subsequent times you can be more relaxed and push the boundaries but not the first time.

May I suggest one more thing? After any interview, it is good idea to send short thank you email for seeing you.

I agree! Dress to impress! Invest in a good wardrobe, you'll feel much better and more confident.
